Once per fortnight (because of course I'd make it weird) I'm here to update you on what I've read, written, and seen related to New York and real estate.

Since I'm giving a talk to first time homebuyers at the end of the month, I've been focusing on how to buy in NYC. From how much you should have saved to valuing a potential purchase, I'm covering the basics so you aren't flying blind.

Real Estate Woes in "The Other Two"

Continuing the "real estate on TV" theme, Comedy Central's new show The Other Two is actually pretty realistic when it comes to the insanity and pitfalls of New York housing. Unlike Friends. Still the least realistic show of all time RE: real estate.

HOW MUCH MONEY DO I NEED TO BUY IN NYC?

Today’s NY Value/lesson: how much do I need to have saved to buy an apt in NYC? Because again, it’s different than what you need to purchase a home in, say, rural VA where I’m from. You can’t just plop down $30k in cash and close 3 weeks later with no agents or lawyers...

TRUMP, COHEN, AND VALUATION

If you guys thought I wasn’t going to talk about the Cohen testimony, you must not know me that well. There’s way too much to cover, but because we are discussing how to buy in NYC, I will mention the absurdity of Trump inflating the value of his real estate holdings in order to buy the Buffalo Bills.

HDFC CO-OPS & MITCHELL-LAMA

Many people believe they will never be able to buy in NYC due to a relatively low salary — those who work in non-profits, for example. But there ARE ways, potentially, to become a homeowner even while taking home less than $60k a year.

What I Did

I don't know about you guys, but I'm still cold. So I'm sticking with my February date night ideas for a little bit longer. At least until spring officially starts in a couple weeks. I break down cool "dinner and a show" ideas in different 'hoods at the link right here. (PS - it's faux fur)
